Nest Doorbell How to & Troubleshooting Guide

Nest Doorbell How to & Troubleshooting Guide

Nest is perhaps one of the sharpest feature-packed doorbells found in the market today. With its wide field of view and HDR recording, it’s among the strongest players in the market. By using an indoor power adapter and the right voltage requirement, you can install it without a chime or an existing doorbell.

The hardest part of using Nest is the installation which requires some holes. If you are installing without an existing doorbell, you’ll have to do more work with the whole wiring system and the transformer. To help you make the most out of Nest doorbell here is a how-to and troubleshooting guide.

How to Install Nest Doorbell

With a nest doorbell, you’ll easily receive a notification anytime someone approaches your home. You can then communicate with them using a built-in two-way audio system. Plus, as compared to other doorbells, it continuously records the video of what happened on your door for the past 30 days.

Although you can do it alone, it involves a number of steps. Since the process can be complicated, if you experience any issues or you are not sure, seek help from a professional.

What You Need

Apart from an existing doorbell that’s compatible with the transformer and the wiring, you need a reliable Wi-Fi connection, a power drill, and a screwdriver.

  • Compatible doorbell wiring. While Nest will work with most doorbells, it should be powered by wires capable of delivering 30 volts.
  • Doorbell Chime. Your door should have a chime with up to 40 volts. If there are more than 2 wires in your chime, it will definitely work. If you only have batteries, it may not work.
  • Reliable Wi-Fi connection. Before starting the process, you must ensure you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
  • Tools. To start the process you need a power drill and screwdriver.

The Process

  1. First, you need to download and install the nest app and then tap add product. If you already have an account, you just need to tap the gear icon at the top right corner.
  2. Place your camera at least a foot away and then move it closer to the blue square inside. Once it detects the QR code located at the back of the battery the square will turn green. If you face issues just do it manually.
  3. Once you are done with the compatibility test, you just need to cut off the power from the circuit breaker.
  4. Snap the plastic or unscrew it first to remove the cover.
  5. Look at how the wires are configured in your chime and choose the ones connected to your terminal. Look at the appropriate labeling set up you see on your chime. Your doorbell chime may have terminals that are labeled front, rear and trans.
  6. Remove the chime connecter.
  7. Using Phillips head screw, screw the wire on the chime connecter.
  8. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the two screws and remove your old doorbell. Next disconnect the wires from the back of the doorbell before bending or taping them so they don’t fall back to the hole.
  9. Run the wires through the center of the hole in the provided wall plate then mark where the holes are on the surface.
  10. Remove the wall plate and then drill a hole where you marked the screw holes then screw the plate on the wall.
  11. Wrap each wire around the screws and then tighten them on the back. While doing this, make sure the exposed parts are not touching each other.
  12. Once you switch on the power, your doorbell should also power up. Next, choose where you installed your nest doorbell and connect the nest to your network.
  13. Finally, you need to ring your doorbell and see whether it’s working. If it’s functional, it should notify you when someone is at the door.

Package tracking

In this package, your video doorbell will alert you when the packages are either picked up or left from your stoop. This will allow you to ward off a package relief or talk to the delivery person.

Familiar face alerts
