How to Fix Kenmore Series 70 Washer Won’t Drain

How do I get my Kenmore washer to drain? If you are asking yourself this question, then this post is meant for you. The Kenmore 70 series are washers and dryers from one of the biggest appliance manufacturers. They include a top-loading unit and large capacity drums.

Although Kenmore does not manufacture Kenmore Series 70 anymore, you can still buy the washer and the replacement parts from third-party vendors. If your washer is not draining, the first thing you need to do is locate the problem.

Find common problems

Before you Google how to force a washer to drain, you need to make sure the lid closes properly. The thing about Kenmore 70 series washers is that they will not enter the spin cycle until the lid is closed properly.

Another thing you should do is verify if you have chosen the right cycle for the load. If necessary, use a cycle that has a higher spin speed.

It is also good to note that the Kenmore washer won’t spin or drain if you use too much detergent. Too much detergent causes excessive suds which can keep the washer from draining. The Kenmore Series 70 has a neutral drain feature. They drain the tub before they start spinning.

The use of an extension cord or an adapter may also be the reason your Kenmore 70 series won’t drain. The reason behind this is the washer will not get adequate power. Try connecting the washer directly to the power socket in the wall.

If none of the above solutions fix the problem, there are three very important things you will have to check.

Check the pump

This is the unit responsible for the removal of water from the tub after the spin cycle. You will find the pump in the main access panel. Start by unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet then remove the panel. See if the pump is clogged. You can pull out clogged clothing or debris from the pump using the needle-nose pliers.

You should also check if the pump is broken in any way. Repairing a broken pump is difficult because finding the repair parts is hard. If it is damaged, you will have to replace the entire pump.

Your washer might not be draining completely because the pump pulley is damaged or because the pump is not rotating freely. In this case, you will have to get a new pump from an authorized parts dealer.

Inspect the hoses

Why does my washer not spin all the water out? The answer might be because the drain hose hasn’t been installed properly. The hose should not be installed more than 96 inches above the floor. A clogged or kinked drain hose can also keep your Kenmore Series 70 washer from draining completely.

Replace the lid switch

If the washer doesn’t sense that the lid has been closed, the Kenmore elite washer will stop draining or spinning. The lid switch is what lets the washer know that you have closed the lid. Replace a defective lid switch.
